Beginner skill guides

Choose one useful skill, then build proof that you can use it.

A good beginner roadmap is not about learning every tool. It is about building foundations, practicing deliberately, and finishing a small portfolio of work.

How to use these roadmaps

Pick one skill that fits your interests and the kind of work you want to explore. Give it a focused trial, complete a few practical projects, then decide whether to deepen it. The SkillPath Path Finder can help you choose a starting direction, and the interactive Skill Roadmaps provide a fuller 30-day outline.

Beginner web development roadmap

Start with semantic HTML, responsive CSS, accessibility basics, and simple JavaScript. Build a personal portfolio, a small-business landing page, and one practical tool such as a task tracker. Focus on finished, mobile-friendly work you can explain—not on collecting frameworks.

Graphic design roadmap for beginners

Learn hierarchy, typography, spacing, color, and a simple design workflow in Canva or Figma. Practice by redesigning crowded content and creating a small set of related graphics. Your first portfolio can include a social campaign, flyer, and basic brand kit with a clear explanation of each choice.

Content writing roadmap

Practice finding a reader’s question, outlining clearly, drafting with evidence, and editing for clarity. Build a few focused samples such as a how-to article, a local-business homepage, and an email sequence. Strong writing samples show the intended reader, purpose, and revision quality.

Video editing roadmap

Learn timeline organization, cuts, captions, audio basics, and export settings. Create a short reel, a talking-head edit, and a one-minute highlight. A beginner portfolio is stronger when it identifies what you edited and uses footage and music you have permission to use.

Excel and data skills roadmap

Practice clean tables, formulas, sorting, filters, lookups, pivot tables, and simple reporting. Build a budget tracker, cleaned contact list, and sample dashboard with anonymized data. Accuracy and clear documentation matter as much as the final chart.

Social media management roadmap

Learn audience research, content pillars, planning, brand voice, and responsible use of basic metrics. Build sample calendars and campaigns for a clearly defined business goal. Mark practice work honestly and avoid promising growth or sales outcomes you cannot control.

What to do next

Choose a skill, complete its first practice project, and save your next actions in My Plan. When you are ready, use the relevant roadmap’s resource suggestions to research tools carefully and compare current pricing and availability.
